Devonport (Tasmania, Australia) Mayor Annette Rockliff announced the closure of Horsehead Creek’s camping area until further notice due to the fuel spill in the Mersey River on January 28.

According to a report, Councillor Rockliff encourages campers to try alternative caravan parks or the camp area behind Wells at Latrobe.

Rockliff stated that the Devonport City Council would continue to assist the Environmental Protection Authority with public notices of closed areas.

Rockliff confirmed that Devonport beaches would remain open.

“While the council’s understanding is that waterways are not closed to the public, it is advised that swimmers and pets do not enter the water in the Mersey River until the clean-up is completed,” Rockliff said.

“Council will continue to assist the EPA with keeping our community in the loop as this clean-up is underway,” Rockliff ended.
