Residents of Gympie in Australia are being asked to voice their opinions on Cooloola’s plan for ecotourism development, which includes plans for cabins at Lake Poona or Double Island Point, a report said.

These plans have drawn serious criticism from environmental groups such as the Noosa Greens and the Wide Bay Burnett Environment Council (WBBEC). They claim that the plan involves the transfer of parts of Great Sandy National Park to a South Australian company to make a profit.

WBBEC describes the walk between Rainbow Beach and Noosa as “currently, a beautiful and remote walking track” and plans to build tourist accommodation at five locations, including powered cabins or glamping tent structures. Guests will be charged $800 per night.

According to the group, aside from the initial disruption caused by the construction phase, heavy service access will continue including the supply of water and gas as well as food and laundry.

Mike Moller, manager of WBBEC, described Lake Poona to be “a uniquely beautiful perched Lake, the only one like it on the mainland.”

He said that “this project continues to be a worrying trend in the management of national parks for private profits.”

Representatives from the Queensland Department of Environment and Science stated that the project was “not considered controlled action” and therefore is not subject to the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

The department says questions can be submitted to the department at ‘[email protected]’.
